Samegrelo

Samegrelo

Samegrelo is located in western Georgia, is a region with a growing reputation for its unique viticulture and winemaking traditions. Nestled between the Black Sea and the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, Samegrelo offers a favorable environment for grape cultivation, characterized by its distinct climate, diverse soils, and rich cultural heritage.

Terroir Features

Samegrelo enjoys a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and warm, humid summers. The proximity to the Black Sea moderates temperatures, ensuring consistent warmth and reducing frost risk, creating ideal conditions for various grape types. This climate promotes healthy vine growth and optimal grape ripening, contributing to the quality and character of Samegrelo's wines.

The region's topography is diverse, including coastal plains, rolling hills, and mountainous areas, creating multiple microclimates that enhance the complexity of its wines. Samegrelo's soils are equally varied, with alluvial soils near rivers, sandy soils along the coast, and clay-loam soils in the hills. These well-drained, nutrient-rich soils support robust vine growth and high-quality grape production.

Traditional Winemaking Methods

Samegrelo's winemaking blends traditional practices with modern innovations, preserving its rich heritage while embracing new techniques. A cornerstone of the region's winemaking is the use of qvevri, large clay vessels buried underground for fermenting and aging wine. This ancient Georgian method enhances the natural flavors and complexity of the wines by allowing gentle micro-oxygenation and maintaining stable temperatures. The qvevri method imparts unique characteristics to the wines, ensuring they reflect the region's distinct terroir.

In addition to traditional qvevri winemaking, Samegrelo's producers are increasingly adopting modern techniques to improve precision and consistency. Stainless steel fermentation tanks and controlled temperature management are commonly used to produce clean, well-defined wines. This blend of ancient and contemporary methods allows Samegrelo to produce a diverse range of wines, from aromatic whites to robust reds, each showcasing the region's unique grape varieties and winemaking expertise.

Districts & Micro-zones (PDOs)

Salkhino Ojaleshi is a distinguished wine from Samegrelo, crafted from the region's flagship Ojaleshi grape variety. Grown in the village of Salkhino, these wines are celebrated for their deep ruby color and rich, aromatic profile, featuring notes of dark berries, spices, and herbs. Full-bodied and well-structured, Salkhino Ojaleshi wines exhibit a harmonious balance of fruitiness and complexity, with a long, satisfying finish. The combination of traditional qvevri fermentation and modern winemaking techniques enhances the natural flavors and distinctive characteristics of this exceptional wine, making it a true representation of Samegrelo's winemaking excellence.
