Adjara Municipalities (Districts)
Adjara is located on the southwestern coast of Georgia, is an emerging wine region with a unique viticulture and winemaking tradition. Nestled between the Black Sea and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, Adjara boasts a diverse and favorable terroir that is gaining recognition for its potential in producing high-quality wines.
Terroir Features
Adjara enjoys a humid subtropical climate, similar to neighboring Guria. The region benefits from the moderating influence of the Black Sea, which ensures mild winters and warm, humid summers. This climate is conducive to vine growth and grape ripening. The region's terrain includes coastal areas, rolling hills, and mountainous regions. This diverse topography creates various microclimates that are ideal for viticulture. Adjara features a mix of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils near the coast and more clay-rich soils in the higher elevations. These soils are generally well-drained and rich in minerals, contributing to the complexity of the wines.
Traditional Winemaking Methods
Adjara's winemaking is a captivating blend of tradition and innovation, deeply rooted in its rich heritage and diverse terroir. Home to over 44 autochthonous grape varieties, Adjara offers a broad range of unique wines. Traditional qvevri methods, involving fermenting and aging in large clay vessels, enhance the wines' natural flavors and complexity. Complementing these ancient techniques, modern practices like stainless steel fermentation ensure precision and consistency.
White wines from Adjara, often made from Tsolikouri, are fresh and aromatic with vibrant acidity. Rosé wines, frequently crafted from Chkhaveri, are light, aromatic, and refreshing, with notes of red berries and citrus. This dynamic approach highlights Adjara's unique terroir and positions it as a significant player in Georgia's winemaking landscape.
