Ojaleshi

Ojaleshi is an indigenous Georgian red grape variety primarily cultivated in the mountainous areas of Samegrelo. It produces high-quality, dark-colored red wines with rich, complex flavors. Ojaleshi is known for its vigorous growth, especially when trained on trellises, which results in abundant yields.

Name

The name "Ojaleshi" (ოჯალეში in Georgian) is derived from the Georgian words "oja," meaning "growing" or "to climb," and "leshi," meaning "forest." This etymology reflects the grape's traditional growth in forested and wild areas, where it often climbs and intertwines with trees and other vegetation.

Viticulture

Ojaleshi thrives in the humid subtropical climate of Samegrelo, where abundant rainfall and mild winters create ideal growing conditions. The fertile clay and loam soils provide excellent drainage and moisture retention, benefiting the deep-rooted vines. Vineyards are situated at various altitudes, influencing temperature and sunlight exposure, which enhances grape ripening and complexity. Traditional vine training and pruning methods, like Guyot and cordon systems, are employed to manage vine vigor and ensure balanced fruit production, contributing to the high quality of Ojaleshi grapes.

Wine styles

Ojaleshi is notable for its ability to produce full-bodied wines with high acidity and robust tannins, making them ideal for long aging.

  • Salkhino Ojaleshi These wines often exhibit flavors of dark fruits such as blackberries and plums, along with spicy and herbal notes. The balance of acidity and tannins makes them suitable for long aging, allowing the wines to develop greater complexity over time.

  • Dry Red Wine. In contrast, regions like Martvili within Samegrelo also produce dry red wines from Ojaleshi grapes, but these wines tend to be less robust in style. Wines from Martvili are known for being very fruit-forward and playful, highlighting bright fruit flavors and a more approachable style.
