Krakhuna

Krakhuna the third member of the renowned Imeretian trio, this early-ripening grape stands out with its unique character and unforgettable qualities. It is a true gem among the region's varietals.

Origin/Name

Due to its early ripening period, some theorized that this variety originated from the east of Georgia. However, this theory was later dismissed. The name of this variety comes from the sound it makes when eaten. In Western Georgia, people say "Krakhunobs," while in Eastern Georgia, they say "Knata Knuti." This linguistic distinction proves that both the name and the variety originated in Western Georgia.

Viticulture

Once a very popular variety in Imereti, it seems to have lost its popularity and planting area due to the Phylloxera invasion from America. This variety is particularly vulnerable to both Phylloxera and mildew.

Wine styles

Due to its early ripening capabilities, this variety can produce wines that range from ultra-powerful and tannic to light and delicate. Its versatility allows for a wide spectrum of styles, catering to diverse palates and preferences.

  • Amber wines from this variety can exhibit a broad range of styles, from soft and playful to strong and heavy. This grape variety is highly dependent on terroir, and skin contact versions are an excellent example of its expressive nature.

  • Classic White arguably hold the greatest potential for this variety. These wines often end up extremely fresh and mineral, sometimes evoking the scent of an ocean breeze. They also have tremendous potential for oak and lees aging, which can further enhance their complexity and depth.

  • Dessert-style wines are quite rare, Krakhuna produces intriguing sweet wines with a remarkable balance of sweetness and acidity. These unique wines are a testament to the variety's versatility and potential.
