The name Shavkapito (შავკაპიტო in Georgian) reflects the grape's distinctive characteristics, with "shav" meaning "black" and "kapito" referring to the grape's small, compact clusters. This name encapsulates the essence of Shavkapito, emphasizing its deep color and concentrated flavors.

Shavkapito, one of Kartli Region's oldest grape varieties, has a long-standing presence in Georgian viticulture.
