Samtskhe–Javakheti Municipalities (Districts)
Samtskhe–Javakheti is situated in the southern part of Georgia. To its north, it is bordered by Imereti and Kartli, while Turkey lies to the south and Adjara-Guria to the west. This picturesque winemaking region encompasses the municipalities of Akhaltsikhe, Aspindza, and Adigeni. Traditionally, terraced vineyards have been established primarily in the valleys of the Mtkvari River and its tributaries, gracefully spreading across the slopes.
Terroir Features
Samtskhe–Javakheti is renowned for its exceptionally high-altitude vineyards. Here, vines thrive at elevations ranging from 900 to 1700 meters above sea level, with 900 meters marking the lower boundary in Meskheti. This unique characteristic makes Meskheti one of the highest-altitude viticulture regions globally, adding to its distinctiveness and charm.
Traditional Winemaking Methods
Southern Georgia's regions stand as historical and ancient centers of viticulture and winemaking. Preserved here are numerous monuments associated with wine culture, including ancient cellars, vineyards, century-old vines, and other significant artifacts. These relics affirm the region's pivotal role in the evolution of Georgian wine culture over millennia. Some scientists even suggest that some of the oldest Georgian grape varieties, such as Saperavi, Dzelshavi, Khikhvi, and others, might have their origins in Meskheti. Additionally, there is an intriguing possibility of a historical connection between the Georgian grape Kharistvala and the Turkish grape Öküzgözü, both of which mean "bull's eye." This linguistic link hints at a deeper, shared viticultural heritage. Another hypothesis posits that Saperavi could have originated from the eastern coast of the Black Sea, in the Kolkheti region, with southern Georgia serving as the cultural conduit from which this variety spread to eastern Georgia.
