This area includes the left bank of the Tekhuri River, extending northeast to the foothills of the Kvibiani mountains, with the villages of Gachedili and Balda to the southeast, and Nobulevi to the northeast. The micro-zone is bordered by the Tekhuri River to the southwest, separating it from Didi Chkoni and Taleri.
History
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Salhino Ojaleshi was officially registered on March 30, 2020. The winemaking tradition in Salhino dates back centuries, with the Ojaleshi grape variety being cultivated in this region for generations. In the mid-19th century, Prince Achille Murat significantly contributed to the revival of viticulture in Samegrelo, planting vineyards with Ojaleshi vines in Salhino and Chakdona. Since 1942, Ojaleshi wine has been produced, initially as a semi-sweet red wine, gaining substantial popularity. Today, Salhino Ojaleshi is produced as a red dry wine, highly appreciated both in Georgia and internationally.
Viticulture
Vineyards in the Salhino micro-zone are located at elevations of 250 meters above sea level. The soils in this region are diverse, including alluvial meadow clayey and sandy soils, humus-carbonate soils, and yellow and red soils, providing excellent conditions for viticulture. The primary grape variety used for Salhino Ojaleshi wine is Ojaleshi, and the use of other grape varieties is prohibited. The vineyards must be planted with specific row spacing and pruning techniques to optimize growth and fruit quality. The grape's sugar content at harvest must be at least 22%, and the yield must not exceed 8 tons per hectare.
Tasting Notes
Salhino Ojaleshi wines exhibit a dark pomegranate color with purple hues. The aroma and flavor are full, refined, lively, extractive, and harmonious, featuring the distinctive varietal aroma characteristic of the geographic area. As the wine ages, it develops a pronounced bouquet with fruit tones.
