Khikhvi, renowned as one of the four pillars of Kakhetian white grape varieties, this grape exemplifies the rich viticultural heritage and distinctive character of Georgia's esteemed wine region.
Origin/Name
There are many speculations about the name and origin of this variety. One of the most convincing theories suggests that it originates from the village of Janaani. Even today, Khikhvi is referred to as Jannanura (grape from Janaani) in that part of Kakheti, supporting this belief.
Viticulture
Among all the white varieties in Kakheti, Khikhvi is considered the most delicate and finicky to work with. It is one of the earliest ripening grapes, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Additionally, its very thin skins make it highly susceptible to both Downy and Powdery Mildew.
Wine styles
Being an early ripening grape, in the hot patches of Kakheti, Khikhvi has the potential for an astronomical accumulation of sugar. This characteristic makes it a uniquely valuable tool for winemaking.

Dry Amber is a traditional Kakhetian style wine, typically crafted in Qvevri. The structural intensity and flavor notes can vary significantly from village to village, as Khikhvi is an exceptional variety for expressing terroir. In the cooler areas of Kakheti, it can be floral and delicate, while in the hotter regions, it transforms into a powerful and robust wine.

The Classic White style also works wonderfully with this variety. The non-skin contact version delivers great complexity and freshness, with the potential for oak aging.

Dessert wines from Khikhvi are truly unique. Sometimes fortified and sometimes not, this variety produces some memorable sweet wines, particularly from the village of Kardanakhi.
