Tsolikouri is a white wine grape variety that holds a significant place in Georgian viticulture.
Name
The name Tsolikouri (წოლიკოური in Georgian) reflects its origins, with "tsoli" meaning "sour" and "kouri" referring to "plum", possibly indicating the tartness and fruity characteristics of the grape. Tsolikouri is also known as Cholikouri and Kolikouri.
Origin
While precise historical records about Tsolikouri's origins are scant, it is deeply intertwined with the winemaking traditions of the Imereti region. Its cultivation dates back centuries, with the grape flourishing in the lush vineyards and mild climate of western Georgia.
Viticulture
Tsolikouri thrives in the moderate climate and diverse soils of the Imereti region, showcasing its adaptability to various terroirs. It is prized for its resilience against pests and diseases, making it a favored choice among local winemakers. While predominantly cultivated in Imereti, Tsolikouri has also found a home in other Georgian regions, including Racha-Lechkhumi and Guria.
