Okureshis Usakhelouri

Okureshis Usakhelouri is a distinguished semi-sweet red wine produced in the Okureshi micro-zone, located in the Lechkhumi region of Georgia. This area includes the villages of Zubi, Isunderi, Okureshi, Ofitara, Ladzgveria, and Makhura, situated on the right and left banks of the Tskhenistskali River.

History

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Okureshi Usakhelouri was officially registered on August 30, 2022. The winemaking tradition in Okureshi dates back centuries, with the Usakhelouri grape variety being cultivated in this region for generations. Notably, industrial-scale production of Usakhelouri wine began in 1942 following the development and implementation of technology for producing naturally semi-sweet wines.

Viticulture

Vineyards in the Okureshi micro-zone are located at elevations between 350 and 650 meters above sea level. The soils are primarily clayey and humus-carbonate, with some regions featuring marl-based soils. The primary grape variety used for producing Okureshi Usakhelouri wine is Usakhelouri. Strict regulations govern grape maturity, vineyard cultivation, and winemaking processes to ensure the high quality of the wine. The grape's sugar content at harvest must be at least 23%, and the vineyards should be planted with specific row spacing and pruning techniques to optimize growth and fruit quality.

Tasting Notes

Okureshi Usakhelouri wines exhibit a dark cherry color with aromas and flavors dominated by red stone fruits such as plums and red currants. The wines are full-bodied with lively acidity, well-rounded tannins, and a pleasant balance. Depending on the level of residual sugar, the wines can range from dry to naturally semi-sweet, with an alcohol content of no less than 13.5% for dry wines and 11% for semi-sweet wines.

Interesting Facts

  • Due to its limited production and high demand, Usakhelouri wine commands an exceptionally high market value, making it one of the most expensive wines in Georgia.
