Muscaturi Rkatsiteli is a newly bred Georgian grape variety developed by V. Kantaria and N. Chakhnashvili at the Georgian Agricultural Institute. It is a cross of Rkatsiteli and Muscat of Alexandria.
Name/History
The name "Muscaturi Rkatsiteli" combines the Georgian word "Rkatsiteli" (რქაწითელი), meaning "red stem," with "Muscaturi," which is derived from the Muscat family of grapes known for their distinctive aromatic qualities. This name highlights the grape variety's unique characteristics, combining the qualities of Rkatsiteli and Muscat. Muscaturi Rkatsiteli is a newly bred grape variety created by crossing the renowned "Muscat of Alexandria" with the Georgian autochthonous grape variety "Rkatsiteli." This crossbreeding aims to combine the aromatic properties of Muscat with the resilience and winemaking potential of Rkatsiteli.
Viticulture
Muscaturi Rkatsiteli is cultivated using both modern and traditional Georgian viticultural practices. The vineyards are often planted in regions with favorable climates that offer a balance of sunshine and rainfall, crucial for developing the grape's aromatic and flavor profiles. The use of Qvevris for fermentation and aging is a common practice, which helps maintain the authenticity and uniqueness of the wine. Vineyard management involves careful canopy management and pruning to ensure optimal sunlight exposure and air circulation, reducing the risk of disease and promoting healthy grape development.
