Name
The name Chinuri (ჩინური in Georgian) is derived from the word "chinuri," meaning "excellent" or "chosen." This moniker hints at the grape's esteemed status in Georgian winemaking culture. Additionally, Chinuri is sometimes referred to as Chinebuli, a name that speaks to the variety's origins in the fertile soils of the Kartli region.
Origin
While concrete evidence pinpointing Chinuri's exact origins is scarce, historical records suggest that the grape has been cultivated in Georgia for centuries. It is believed to have originated in the Kartli region, nestled amidst the rolling hills and verdant landscapes of eastern Georgia. Like many Georgian grape varieties, Chinuri's lineage is steeped in mystery and legend, intertwining with the nation's rich viticultural heritage.
Viticulture
Chinuri thrives in Georgia's diverse terroirs, adapting effortlessly to a range of climatic conditions and soil types. The grape's resilience to pests and diseases, coupled with its ability to retain acidity even in warmer climates, makes it a prized asset for winemakers. While it finds its primary home in the Kartli region, Chinuri vines can also be found scattered across other winemaking regions of Georgia, including Kakheti and Imereti.
Beyond Georgia's borders, Chinuri has begun to carve out a niche in other winemaking regions, from neighboring Armenia and Azerbaijan to as far afield as Russia and Ukraine. This expansion speaks to the grape's adaptability and its growing appeal on the international stage.

Chinuri's chameleon-like nature lends itself to an array of winemaking styles, from crisp and refreshing whites to complex and age-worthy amber wines.
