Zhghia

Zhghia is a rare and lesser-known Kakhetian variety from Georgia. This variety is part of Georgia's rich viticultural heritage, which boasts over 500 indigenous grape varieties

Origin/Name

The origins of Zhghia, like many ancient Georgian grape varieties, are somewhat obscure due to historical challenges such as phylloxera epidemics, wars, and Soviet agricultural policies that led to the decline and near extinction of many traditional vines. However, the renewed interest in preserving and reviving these ancient varieties has brought Zhghia back into focus. Even though its name can be spelled differently as Zhghia, Zhgia, Jghia, or Jgia, this grape's rich history and cultural significance remain central to Georgia's viticultural heritage.

Viticulture

Zhghia is a rare Georgian grape variety known for thriving in specific microclimates with well-drained soils. It has a long growing season that allows for complex flavor development. Zhghia shows natural resistance to common vine diseases and is typically hand-harvested to ensure high-quality yields. This grape is well-suited for traditional Georgian winemaking techniques, including fermentation in qvevri, which enhances its unique flavors and aromas. Efforts are ongoing to preserve and revive Zhghia, reflecting the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of Georgian viticulture.

Wine styles

Due to its ease of cultivation and light color, Zhghia excels as both a versatile blending partner and a distinctive solo variety.

  • Dry Red wines made from Zhghia are rich and complex, with a balance of acidity and tannins and a variety of aromatic notes.
