Zegaani

Zegaani is a renowned red dry Qvevri wine produced in the Zegaani micro-zone, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia. This area includes vineyards situated on the northeastern slopes of the Tsiv-Gombori mountain range. Zegaani wine is known for its dark pomegranate color and complex, balanced taste.

History

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Zegaani was officially registered on August 30, 2022. The winemaking tradition in Zegaani dates back to ancient times, with significant advancements in the 19th century under the influence of prominent Georgian figures like Alexander Chavchavadze. The region has a long history of viticulture and winemaking, utilizing the unique climatic and soil conditions to produce high-quality wines.

Viticulture

Vineyards in the Zegaani micro-zone are located at elevations between 400 and 550 meters above sea level. The soils are predominantly brown carbonate, which are highly suitable for viticulture. The primary grape variety used for Zegaani wine is Saperavi, and the use of other grape varieties is prohibited. The vineyards must adhere to specific regulations regarding grape maturity, vineyard cultivation, and winemaking processes to ensure the high quality of the wine.

Tasting Notes

Zegaani red wine has a dark pomegranate color and offers a full, velvety taste with tones of blackberry and blackcurrant. With aging, the wine develops a bouquet with hints of spices (pepper, clove) and dried fruits (prune). It typically has an alcohol content of no less than 12%, with balanced tannins and a rich, complex flavor profile.
