Dzelshavi
Share
Dzelshavi is an indigenous grape variety that thrives in the picturesque Imereti region of Georgia. This remarkable grape is celebrated for its contribution to the production of distinctive and vibrant red wines, known for their playful and lively character. Its cultivation in the lush landscapes of Imereti underscores the region's rich viticultural heritage and commitment to preserving native grape varieties.
Origin/Name
Originally a Gurian variety, now is grown almost in all western Georgia and there is a theory that the name "Aladasturi" could be linked to the phrase "Allah-dasturi," which translates to "Allah-approved" in Persian or Turkish. This theory suggests that the grape variety was named to signify its high quality or divine approval. Georgia has a long history of interaction with Persian and Ottoman cultures, so such linguistic influences are plausible. However, this theory remains one of several and lacks definitive historical evidence.
Viticulture
Aladasturi thrives in the humid, mild climate and fertile soils of the Imereti and Guria regions in western Georgia. Vineyard practices focus on training and pruning vines for optimal sunlight and air circulation, and managing pests and diseases due to the humid conditions. Harvesting is carefully timed for peak ripeness, usually occurring from late September to early October, often by hand to ensure quality. The yields are moderate, with some producers using organic or biodynamic practices for sustainability. The main challenge is climate variability, requiring adaptable vineyard management to maintain grape quality.
Wine styles
Because of its light color, Dzelshavi works great for playful dry red wines.

Dry Red This grape variety produces wines with bright red hues, fresh and fruity aromas, and flavors of red berries and cherries. The moderate tannins and acidity make Aladasturi wines refreshing and easy to drink, suitable for casual and enjoyable wine experiences.
