Obcha is the latest Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in Georgia and only the second officially recognized appellation from the Imereti region. Obcha micro-zone, located in the Baghdati Municipality. The region encompasses the villages of Obcha Pirveli, Obcha Meore, Dimi, Rokiti, and Persati, situated at altitudes ranging from 120 to 420 meters above sea level. Obcha wines are crafted from Tsolikouri, Tsitska, Krakhuna and Otskhanuri Sapere grape varieties.
History
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Obcha was officially registered on December 19, 2024. Winemaking in the Obcha region has deep historical roots and has been renowned for centuries. References to Obcha as a winemaking area date back to the 19th century, where its wines were noted for their exceptional character.
Viticulture
Vineyards in the Obcha micro-zone are located on gently sloping hills and terraces at altitudes of 120 to 420 meters. The soils in this region include yellow-brown soils, notable for their high water permeability and nutrient balance; and carbonate-rich chernozem soils, which are deep and fertile with neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Tasting Notes
Amber Obcha wines exhibit a vibrant amber color with aromas of ripe yellow fruits such as pear and apple, accented by citrus undertones. The palate is full and balanced, with refreshing acidity enhancing its lively character. Red Obcha wines are deep red in color and characterized by a velvet texture with berry aromas, including blackberry and blackcurrant. With aging, they develop complex notes of spices like pepper and clove, as well as dried fruits such as prunes.
