Manavi

Manavi is a renowned white wine produced in the Manavi micro-zone, located in Outer Kakheti, on the southern slopes of the Tsiv-Gombori Range. This region includes the villages of Tokhliauri, Manavi, Burdiani, Giorgitsminda, Antoki, Mariamjvari, Didi Chailuri, Patara Chailuri, Kakabeti, and Verkhviani. Manavi wines are exclusively made from the Kakhuri Mtsvane grape variety.

History

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Manavi was officially registered on August 21, 2006. Manavi has a deep historical significance, as it was once primarily a royal estate in the Kingdom of Kakheti from the 15th to 18th centuries. The village and its surroundings were governed by the king's servants, and even Georgian kings had vineyards here named "Mepis Zvari" (King’s Vineyard). The Manavi fortress, still standing atop a hill, dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries, with significant constructions in the 16th and 18th centuries, further emphasizing the region's historical importance.

Viticulture

Vineyards in the Manavi micro-zone are situated at elevations between 450 and 800 meters above sea level. The soil types in this region include dark brown (black-like) carbonated soils and meadow-brown soils, which are ideal for viticulture. Manavi wine is made exclusively from the Kakhuri Mtsvane grape variety. The grapes must be harvested with a minimum sugar content of 19%, and winemaking processes must take place within the Kakheti zone.

Tasting Notes

Manavi wines are known for their light greenish-straw color and feature fresh, floral, and fruity aromas. These wines have a lively and delicate character with meadow flower tones and fruit notes that develop with aging. The palate is well-balanced and refined, offering a creamy texture that is both refreshing and life-inducing.

Interesting Facts

  • The name Manavi likely stems from the word "Manav," which is derived from ancient Georgian terms and denotes certain positive human qualities, such as wisdom, compassion, and inner strength.
