Kvareli

Kvareli is a distinguished red dry wine produced in the Kvareli micro-zone, located within the administrative district of Kvareli in the Kakheti region of Georgia. This area is situated on the left bank of the Alazani River, bordered to the north by the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains and includes several villages such as Shilda, Eniseli, Sabue, Almati, Gremi, and Shakriani.

History

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Kvareli was officially registered on December 10, 2007. The winemaking tradition in Kvareli has deep historical roots, with the region being known for high-quality wine production for centuries. The industrial development of viticulture in Kvareli began in the 20th century, with the establishment of large, well-equipped wineries in the area. Kvareli wine has been produced since 1966, earning numerous accolades over the years.

Viticulture

Vineyards in the Kvareli micro-zone are located at elevations between 250 and 550 meters above sea level. The soils are diverse, including alluvial, deluvial, and clay soils, providing excellent conditions for viticulture. The primary grape variety used for Kvareli wine is Saperavi, and the use of other grape varieties is prohibited. Strict regulations govern grape maturity, vineyard cultivation, and winemaking processes to ensure the high quality of the wine. The grape's sugar content at harvest must be at least 19%, and the yield must not exceed 10 tons per hectare.

Tasting Notes

Kvareli wines exhibit a dark red color with rich, velvety, and harmonious flavors. The aroma is full-bodied and refined, featuring the distinctive varietal characteristics of the geographic area. As the wine ages, it develops a pronounced bouquet with fruit tones.
