Kindzmarauli
Share
Kindzmarauli is a renowned semi-sweet red wine produced in the Kakheti region of Georgia, specifically within the Kvareli municipality. Known for its dark red color and harmonious, velvety taste. Kindzmarauli enjoys a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. The wine's unique characteristics stem from the specific terroir of the Kindzmarauli micro-zone, including its moderate climate, distinct soil types, and traditional Georgian winemaking methods.
History
The history of Kindzmarauli wine is deeply rooted in Georgia's ancient winemaking traditions, with the use of the Qvevri method playing a significant role. However, it wasn't until 1942 that Kindzmarauli production became standardized, thanks to government initiatives that introduced new technologies and methods for semi-sweet wine production. The wine was officially registered on March 30, 2006, with the registration number 787, ensuring its authenticity and quality under Georgian law.
Viticulture
Viticulture in the Kindzmarauli micro-zone involves specific practices to maintain the high standards of this esteemed wine. Vineyards are situated at elevations between 250 to 550 meters above sea level, with a particular focus on vine spacing, pruning, and pest control. The region's soils are predominantly alluvial, including varieties rich in volcanic and schist components, which are mineral-rich and conducive to growing high-quality Saperavi grapes. Regulations dictate that only grapes from the Saperavi and Saperavi Budeshuri varieties can be used, and strict controls are in place for grape maturity, transportation, and wine production processes to preserve the wine's distinctive qualities.
Tasting Notes
It features intense notes of ripe blackberries, cherries, and plums, complemented by subtle hints of violets, dark chocolate, and spices. The natural sweetness of the Saperavi grapes is perfectly balanced by its refreshing acidity and silky tannins.
