Khvanchkara

Khvanchkara is a naturally semi-sweet red wine produced in the Racha region of Georgia, specifically within the Khvanchkara micro-zone. Known for its light to dark ruby color and harmonious, velvety taste, Khvanchkara is made exclusively from the Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties.

History

The wine's history dates back to the 19th century, with its first documented mention in 1875. Initially known as "Kipiani Wine," it gained international recognition and was later renamed Khvanchkara in 1930. PDO was officially registered on July 14, 2005, with registration number 1.

Viticulture

Vineyards are situated at elevations between 450 and 750 meters above sea level, with specific spacing and pruning practices. The region's soils include humus-carbonate and alluvial varieties, rich in minerals, enhancing grape quality. Grapes must be harvested with a minimum sugar content of 24%. Grape processing and winemaking must occur within the micro-zone, though bottling is allowed throughout Georgia. The wine is produced by incomplete fermentation of grape must, and it can be marketed only after January 1st following the harvest.

Tasting Notes

The wine exhibits a rich bouquet of red fruit aromas, including ripe cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, complemented by subtle notes of pomegranate and blackberries, with a hint of freshly crushed black pepper on the nose. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity, with velvety tannins and a smooth, lingering finish. Hints of violets, dried fruit, and a touch of spice enhance its complexity, making it a delightful and aromatic wine experience.
