Kardanakhi Estate
Share
Kardanakhi Estate was founded in the heart of Kakheti by Kaha Baindurashvili and his wife, Nina Kochiashvili, who made their first wine in 2020. But don't judge this brand by its young age: Nina is a savvy businesswoman, and Kaha served as Georgia's Minister of Finance and gained a reputation as a reformer during his time. Now, they have big plans, enough energy, and enough drive to make their winery a household name in Georgian winemaking.
The winery building has a rich history: it was erected in 1886, and the first vintage was produced there in 1904. Remarkably, the winery still utilizes the same qvevris (traditional Georgian clay vessels) that were used to make wine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The largest of them holds up to 4 tons — qvevri of this size are now a rare sight in Georgia. This marani (Georgian for "wine cellar") operated for only 19 years until 1923 and was closed down during Soviet occupation. It took Nino and Kaha a painstaking three years to meticulously restore the winery and reclaim its rightful place in history.
Nestled in Kardenakhi village, formerly known as Kardanakhi, the winery boasts 2.5 hectares of vineyards across the micro-zones of Tsarapi and Akhoebi with Rkatsiteli and Saperavi vines, holding an average age of 35 years. In the vineyards, organic practices reign supreme, while the winery itself, with its state-of-the-art equipment, embraces a zero-waste philosophy and aspires to become a fully green wine cellar. This concept of sustainable winemaking includes architectural solutions that utilize natural cooling and modern technologies to minimize the negative impact of machine energy consumption.
Blackbird Wine label's minimalist sketch reflects qvevri's natural, minimal intervention philosophy of Qvevri winemaking. A blackbird, drawn to grape juice, symbolizes both its love for grapes and the "Qvevri song" – sounds emitted by vessels during the primary fermentation. This work of Marika Kochiashvili, Georgian artist working in Great Britain , bridges Georgian centuries-old tradition with a modern aesthetic, which is the idea of a qvevri wine – a renewed life of the ancient tradition in modern times. For the same reasons Blackbird (wine) became one of the trademarks of Kardanakhi Estate.
