Budeshuri Saperavi

Budeshuri Saperavi is a distinct clone of the well-known Saperavi grape, Georgia's most prominent blue grape variety. This clone is characterized by slightly smaller berries and a unique flavor profile compared to the standard Saperavi. Both types share the trait of having red flesh, contributing to their deep color and rich taste.

Name

The name "Budeshuri" likely refers to the elongated shape of the berries, distinguishing it from the standard, more rounded Saperavi grapes. This unique morphological characteristic is a key identifier of this clone.

Origin

Budeshuri Saperavi is believed to have originated in either the Kartli region or the colder, outer areas of Kakheti in Georgia. These regions' specific climatic conditions and terroirs may have contributed to the mutation, resulting in the distinct elongated berry shape and unique flavor profile.

Viticulture

Budeshuri Saperavi is an earlier ripening variety compared to standard Saperavi. It has thinner skin, making it slightly more challenging to cultivate. However, the high skin-to-flesh ratio enhances its flavor profile, making it a very fragrant and distinct variety. This unique clone adds diversity and depth to Georgian wines with its unique characteristics.

Wine styles

Because of its early ripening and unique berry shape, Budeshuri Saperavi is an excellent partner for blending with standard Saperavi. It adds a new dimension to the wines, enriching their complexity and enhancing their overall character.

  • Red wine. When produced as a solo variety, Budeshuri Saperavi wines can be lighter in style than standard Saperavi, particularly in colder terroirs. When blended with Saperavi, it adds great complexity, enhancing both the aromas and flavors, and elevating the overall wine profile.
