Bolnisi is a prestigious wine produced in the Bolnisi micro-zone of the Kvemo Kartli region in Georgia. This area is situated in the basins of the Mashavera and Khrami rivers, at an elevation of 570 meters above sea level. Bolnisi wines include white, amber, red, and rosé variations, each known for their distinct flavors and high quality.
History
With evidence such as Neolithic clay Qvevri and grape seeds found in the region, underscoring its ancient viticultural heritage. The PDO for Bolnisi was officially established on July 19, 2018. The region's winemaking traditions have been shaped by various cultures over the centuries, including significant influence from German colonists in the early 19th century. These colonists introduced new grape varieties and modern winemaking techniques, revitalizing the local wine industry and leaving a lasting impact on Bolnisi's viticulture.
Viticulture
The Bolnisi micro-zone's vineyards are located at elevations ranging from 500 to 800 meters above sea level. The region's soils are diverse, including glade brown and alluvial soils, which are ideal for viticulture. The designated grape varieties for Bolnisi white and amber wines include Rkatsiteli, Chinuri, and Goruli Mtsvane, while red wines use Saperavi, Tavkveri, Shavkapito, and Asuretuli Shavi. Rosé wines are produced from processed colored-grape varieties or a mix of white and red wines.
Tasting Notes
Bolnisi wines are known for their distinctive flavors and aromas. The white wines have a light color with delicate floral tones, a soft and harmonic taste enriched with fruit notes through aging. The red wines present a dark red hue, with a intense bouquet that becomes fruitier over time, offering a full-bodied, velvety, and harmonious taste. Rosé wines are characterized with delicate floral aromas, and a joyful, exquisite taste. Amber wines range from light to dark amber in color, featuring complex aromas with sharp fruit tones and a velvety, energetic taste with a well-developed bouquet and characteristic acidity.

Bolnisi was once called Katharinenfeld, named after the German settlement established by Swabian immigrants from Württemberg in 1818.
