Akhoebi is a distinguished red dry wine produced in the Akhoebi micro-zone, located in the Gurjaani municipality, within the administrative territory of the village of Kardanakhi in Georgia. This micro-zone is situated on the northeastern slopes of the Tsiv-Gombori mountain range, at an elevation of 350-750 meters above sea level. The area is bordered by Bakurtsikhe to the northwest, the Mkhvri-Khevi stream to the southeast, the railway to the northeast, and the highway to the southwest. The total area of the micro-zone is 345 hectares.
History
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Akhoebi was officially registered on May 29, 2020. The winemaking tradition in Akhoebi is deeply rooted in the region's history.
Viticulture
Vineyards in the Akhoebi micro-zone are planted at elevations between 350 and 750 meters above sea level. The soils in this region are primarily deluvial-proluvial, consisting of carbonate clay, clayey, and rocky layers. The soils are generally clayey or light clayey, with a humus content of 2.04-4.91% in the top layers. The primary grape varieties used for Akhoebi wine are Saperavi and/or Saperavi Budeshuri. The vineyards must adhere to specific regulations regarding grape maturity, vineyard cultivation, and winemaking processes to ensure the high quality of the wine. The sugar content of the grapes at harvest must be at least 21%, and the yield must not exceed 10 tons per hectare.
Tasting Notes
Akhoebi wines exhibit a dark red color with deep hues. They offer impeccable, full, extractive, and velvety aromas and flavors, characterized by a harmonious balance and distinctive varietal aroma typical of the geographic area. As the wine ages, it develops a pronounced bouquet with fruit tones.
