Akhasheni is a notable red semi-sweet wine produced in the Akhasheni micro-zone, located in the Kakheti region of Georgia. This area includes the villages of Akhasheni, Mukuzani, and the surrounding regions situated on the right bank of the Alazani River.
History
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Akhasheni was officially registered on August 30, 2005. The winemaking tradition in Akhasheni has deep historical roots, with evidence of viticulture in the region dating back centuries. The area's unique climatic and soil conditions have contributed to the development of its distinctive wine profile. Akhasheni wines have been produced since the early 20th century, gaining recognition for their high quality and unique semi-sweet taste.
Viticulture
Vineyards in the Akhasheni micro-zone are located at elevations between 250 and 550 meters above sea level. The soils in this region are diverse, including alluvial, deluvial, and brown forest soils, providing excellent conditions for viticulture. The primary grape variety used for Akhasheni wine is Saperavi, and the use of other grape varieties is prohibited. Strict regulations govern grape maturity, vineyard cultivation, and winemaking processes to ensure the high quality of the wine. The grape's sugar content at harvest must be at least 22%, and the yield must not exceed 10 tons per hectare.
Tasting Notes
Akhasheni wines exhibit a deep, dark red color. The aroma and flavor are full, rich, and harmonious, featuring notes of ripe red berries, plums, and hints of chocolate. The wines have a velvety texture with a balanced sweetness, lively acidity, and well-rounded tannins, creating a luxurious and lingering finish.
